“Anything hockey girls can do, hockey boys can do too!” Same – same, vice – versa.
But boys be warned, you may have to train really hard.
Meet my friend Abagael
.
Watch out boys if a girl like Abagael is trying out for your team. She has been playing hockey since she was 5 years old, and she has always played on a boys team in an all-boys league.
Playing the game of hockey with her boy team mates for 8 years, she has been the only girl who has played hockey at the elite level in Red Deer MHA over the last two years. During this time she also wore a proud letter A on her right shoulder, as she was also the team’s Assistant Captain.
Last year, Abagael was selected to play on the All-Star team. Making the cut to the All-Star isn’t for everyone, you have to be especially good to land on this echelon team of hockey players.
What it takes to make the All-Star Team
Here’s how Abagael landed her spot on the All-Star podium!
Each team in the division selects three players to submit to the All-Star prospects list. The nomination is made by team-mates/peers & the coach. The team was only able to submit one defence player, and they unanimously chose Abagael as their finest for this position.
This all star team of 17 kids live and play hockey in a city of over 100,000 people. Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. It’s a real home-town-hockey city which is proud to host it’s own WHL Red Deer Rebels, at the Enmax Centrium.

We have been following our friend Abagael’s hockey career here at Hockey Spirit Fundraising for some time now. In fact you may have spotted Abagael in previous editions of our hockey fundraising calendar. She and her big brother, Mathew, often come by to pitch in when we are creating Hockey Spirit Fundraising Calendar art. To the right you’ll see Abagael featured as our little girl goalie scene from the 2007/2008 Hockey Spirit Fundraising Calendar.
Abagael Debuts in the Hockey Spirit Fundraising Calendar Art Collection
Below are a few of the Hockey Spirit Fundraising Calendar scenes which Abagael has appeared in. Can you spot her? I wonder if now that she has moved along to join her new girls team if she too will cheer “Yiki Ki kie kie ki ki“ like the girls I met in 2009?

Abagael is true joy to watch on the ice. She is smooth on her skates and plays with a keen sense of the game. My daughter has asked me many times if she will be as good as Abagael one day. She is a true role model for all female players, and the boys can learn a few tricks from her too. Congratulations to Abagael for her many years of hard work and dedication to hockey. It has paid off as she recently made the Bantam Girls AAA team.
Hi Teresa,
A few weeks ago, my husband Brian came home and told me he had bumped into Abagael’s Dad, Todd. Brian, proudly told me how the kids were doing. Abagael making the All-Star Team had my total attention! I was so proud of her – I knew she was pretty good at hockey, but I had no idea she was “THIS” good. What a fine hockey example Abagael is. I loved hearing that your little girl aspires to be as good as Abagael. It’s reasoning such as this which sparked me to share her story. It’s a good one. Lot’s of tingles and pride. Abagael and her big bro Mathew are super kids, and they are now amazing teens. We’ve loved watching them grow up. They’ve always been total troopers, they keenly show up any time we need hockey models for our calendar. Hockey brings good people together in special ways.
